The Town Hall clerks will now have to work one afternoon a week – they’re not pleased. The union would prefer that their members worked half an hour more every day, rather than 2.5 hours on one particular afternoon. Anyway, talks are still taking place with the staff but it is liable to be a Tuesday or Thursday afternoon.
This move, a consequence of the Decreto Real 20/2011 approved by the new Central Government, will affect 700 employees who will now have to work a 37.5-hour week, rather than a 35-hour one, but without getting any extra money.
The idea is that by increasing work hours it will eliminate the necessity of taking on new staff during 2012, but as the clerks have also heard that their salaries will be frozen this year, after taking a 5% cut last year, nobody is contemplating breaking out party hats and celebratory farting cushions in the near future.
The chief opposition party, the PSOE, like the workers, would prefer a longer morning (by half an hour only) during the five work days, but without a doubt, the average working Motrileño prefers one afternoon a week. Seeing as this is all about providing an administrative service for the townsfolk, paid for by the townsfolk – which is what the clerks are getting paid for, after all, then hopefully that is what will prevail.
