Locals from the village have been demanding that a mobile-telephone aerial be taken down in the Barrio de La Loma in Las Maravillas.

The mast, which belongs to Vodaphone has been blamed locally for several cases of cancer in the immediate area. Whether that is true or not, it is irrelevant, as the mere perception of a noxious effect will be enough to cause a ground swell and its eventual taking down.

The structure has been in place for about a decade but a lot of extra housing has appeared there in the meantime, including a recently inaugurated children’s park, as well as a small sports hall.

While one can share the locals concern – nobody wants one near where they live or where their children go to school, for example – but everyone wants decent mobile telephone coverage – you can’t have both; it’s that simple. Is this, then, just another clear case of NIMBY?
