Fining Campervans

A new decree from Motril Council has wafted its way down the corridors of power and is now being implemented by the Tourism Department. Continuous complaints from residents living in the tourist zones of the beaches, golf course and near the camp sites of Motril have sparked this new initiative.
What has got the Motrileños so upset you may well ask? Black flag beaches? No. Businesses closing down over the winter months due to lack of trade? No, try again. Lack of promotion and marketing on the only decent tourist attraction Motril has to offer, i.e. the golf course and Playa Granada. Nope. You are entirely wrong … the Motrileños are incensed that the campervans keep arriving at the beaches, park up next to the beach (usually in the best position for a nice view of the sea and blocking everyone else’s view) and stay there for days instead of using the designated camp sites of which there are not one but two to choose from.
The object of this decree is to preserve resources, the natural spaces of the coast and its surroundings and to guarantee that the local people are able to use the parking spaces taken by the campervans. Motril Council does not want to persecute the campervan enthusiast but would like all those who do arrive into the area in a campervan to use the proper facilities available to them. Fines start at 90 euros and could be as high as 450 euros.
