Populism on the Rise

A populist and mostly right-wing wave is washing up over the Nordic countries. They have brought anti-immigrant rhetoric and policies that were unthinkable just a few years ago.
This trend has had political consequences for traditional politics in the Nordic region. However, despite their rapid rise, most nationalist and populist parties still lack voter support on election day.

Danish Outing

Many travel agencies in Denmark market tours to this area of Andalucia. In fact, many more tours come than we realize. The reason we hardly notice them is because the tour groups are very busy experiencing more in one week than the most of us here do in a given month. English as She is Spoke

As I was saying, about this whole American/English thing – after 30 years or so living in the USA, I think I qualify as bi-lingual. However, after a 10-year absence, I’m finding that some of the linguistic tendencies of my American cousins strike my ear in a peculiar way. Americana – April

Dave and Arlene Nichols provide another combined Anglo-American musings: Dave on humour differences and Arlene on how the Royal Wedding is seen in the States

Mette Owen in her Danish Column had a chat with Else Byskov; about her own writings and what influence the Danish writer Martinus had on her.

The Unmentionables & A Mention

When writing this, a cold wind from the North blew away my washing from the line on the kitchen patio: sheets, pillowcases, ‘unmentionables’ – you name it – are now impaled on the Bougainvillea bushes and lemon trees below.

Petit Fours

Nothing special happened in Germany last month, but lots of political petit fours were consumed. Our darling politician, the Minister of Defence, had to swallow three of them within a few days. Does he know what is going on in his own ministry? – No: letters of soldiers being opened systematically; death through possible bullying…

Life or Death Debate

Is it acceptable for doctors not to attempt to save a life? Is it okay for doctors to decide ahead of time, whether a patient who goes into cardiac arrest, should be resuscitated or admitted to intensive care?
