In this world of political and economic turmoil, it is very rare to hear something positive in the media. But at seven o’clock in the morning on Thursday February 23rd, while having our coffee and croissants, we heard some wonderful news on the television. A girl had been born to Swedish Crown Princess Victoria and Prince Daniel.

Hummel is Danish

The European Men’s Handball Championships in Serbia are happening as I write this article. I watched Denmark lose to both Poland and Serbia, but smiled at the fact that at least both winning teams were sporting Danish uniforms. I recognized the distinctive chevron sleeve trim on the jerseys and shorts and knew instantly that they were hummel (spelled with lower case h) uniforms. This chevron trim and a stylized bumblebee are the company’s logo.

Although it is only weeks since the scandal broke over our President’s bearings, it slowly starts to feel like years. Under every pebble lurks a new ‘scandal’ and I can’t help but think, that there are a lot of people out there who follow their own agendas even if it is only higher sales figures or ratings. Saying that the ongoing controversy partly is his fault, too; bad management – admitting news only after it breaks does not appear very trustworthy.

As far as I can remember, Almuñécar has never been as beautifully adorned for Christmas as this year. The spectacular Christmas tree at the Town Hall square, with hundreds of poinsettias in a 7 metre high structure, and the fabulous decorations of the many roundabouts, especially the one at Avenida Carlos I, with a huge cello in the middle.

Watching the morning TV news the other day, I began to muse upon the American attitude towards foreigners, and foreign Countries. Tricky to define, I concluded. You can’t really call Americans xenophobic – mainly because the majority have never met a foreigner. No, the best word I could come up with is “insular”. For example, the demise of the little-lamented Colonel Gaddafy got a couple of minutes. Likewise, the bail-out of the Greek economy by the ECB, at a cost of gazillions.
