Lorry Sheds Munitions Load

An accident on Tuesday involving a lorry carrying munitions caused three hours of nail-biting, near El Fargue munitions factory not far from the city of Granada.

The vehicle was carrying mortar rounds and explosives when it shed most of its load, bound for Ukraine, on a bend causing the cargo to slide and break free through the trailer side. However, there were no injuries, and the driver got clear of the the lorry unharmed.

Was there any risk to the public; i.e. an explosion? Well according to the authorities, there was no immediate risk.

There is an emergency protocol to follow in case of accidents of this kind, which was activated by the Junta de Andalucía, bringing in the bomb squad units (TEDAX NRBQ) to defuse and secured the explosives before transferring them back to the factory in a van.

In the meantime, firefighter personnel set up a precautionary water line, though no fires or detonations occurred. Furthermore, the road was closed in both directions for over two hours, as a security perimeter was set up up to 750 metres from the lorry.

The accident was attributed to a poorly distributed load rather than speeding, apparently.

Editorial comment: somebody at the loading bay will be looking for alternative employment and the driver will need to purchase new undwear.
