There is a touch of sad irony that a man who ran a roast-chicken shop died from the burns suffered after a gas explosion in Estación de Cartama on Avenida de Andalucía.

The gas explosion or deflagration took place last Sunday around 09.30h and the 50-year-old man caught the full blast. He was rushed to the Major Burns Unit at the Hospital Virgen del Rocío in Sevilla, where he passed away the next day; i.e., this Monday.

As for the damage to the premises caused by the explosion, which not only destroyed the roast-chicken shop but also blew out the walls separating it from a bar on one side and a mattress shop on the other.

However, it was fortunate that the explosion occurred that early in the morning because had it been lunch time with the establishment full of customers, there would have been more fatalities. As it was, a female employee was present but not next to where the explosion occurred (most likely caused by a butane bottle) but she also received burns of differing severity although her condition was described as “less serious” at the time of the incident.

The fire department turn-out involved three crews tasked with putting the fire out whilst the Policia Local and the Protección Civil secured the area. After the injured were evacuated, efforts focused on evaluating the structural damage to the affected premises.
