Abseiler Dies in a Barranco

An abseiler lost his life in a narrow series of cascades in the Barranco de Trevélez. The Guardia Civil has repeatedly warned people about how dangerous this area is.

It appears that he fell into the fast moving water with its cascades and deep pools and drowned.

The emergency coordination centre, 112, called out the Guardia Civil and the 061 ambulance service, as well as the Guardia Civil mountain-rescue team with its emergency helicopter equipped with a winch for reaching areas with difficult access.

The emergency workers recovered the lifeless body, which will be taken to an anatomical forensic institute for an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death, which is the normal protocol.

There have been previous deaths in this hazardous area: one in November 2023, and a double fatality in June the year before.
