Abseiler Dies in Rio Trevélez

The Grupo de Rescate Especial de Intervención en Montaña (GREIM) belonging to the Guardia Civil recovered the body in La Taha (Alpujarra).

GRA ALP Abseiling Rio Trevelez Deaths JN22The incident took place a little before 17.00h on Sunday, which was when the emergency call centre received an alert from one of the victim’s companions.

According to the caller, the victim’s leg had become trapped between rocks and they could not get him out of the water in time.

The emergency centre despatched the Guardia Civil’s mountain-rescue team to where the incident had taken place. However, as the operation required the team to work its way down the steep-sided barranco it wasn’t until the early hours of yesterday that the team could recover the body.

It is far from the first time that there has been a fatal accident within this barranco; in fact, there have been eight deaths. Only this summer the bodies of two abseilers were found floating in one of the pools.

The said mountain-rescue team describes this spot as the most dangerous one in the whole of Spain for abseilers.
