It is no longer unusual to see sea beasties swimming along the Costa Tropical. Last Sunday, for example, a blue shark (tintorera) was spotted just off Almuñécar.

The photo we are using is from a video provided by Boiche at Open Water La Herradura (diving school & excursions) who says that have spotted giant manta rays, humpback whales and dozens of dolphins. Rumours that he has a mermaid in his bathtub at home are unfounded.

Anyway, this blue shark was about four metres long, and like our honorary, paper-edition Editor, David Darby, has a long nose. According to the Aula del Mar belonging to the University of Granada, it has large rounded eyes and a slightly curved dorsal fin… which nobody wan’t to see approaching them when out swimming.

They normally cruise around at a depth of between 60 and 300 metres, mostly at night, and is when they approach the coast – midnight skinny-dippers beware.

Actually, it’s fussy eater and normally lunches out on other fish and mollusks, and rarely consumes marine mammals or seabirds.

Open Water La Herradura organises outings to spot unusual marine life and has three marine biologists amongsts its staff. Obviously, they operate at respectful distances from such sea life in order not to disturb or create anxiety.
