Reasons To Be Grumpy

We drive through town every day, passing all the famous revamped roundabouts. I do not recall an opening ceremony and photo opportunity by the illustrious staff of the ayuntamiento acknowledging this immense waste of public money. Over quarter of a million euros I think? They are probably too embarrassed to be connected to this visual mess.

They are all a disgrace. The ceramic mosaic fruits are crumbling and cracked, the vegetation is running rampant and these are the first things a visitor sees on entering the town! There is only one chance to make a first impression! But we all know that nobody will be called to account.

Luckily, if they are entering from Motril direction, they will not know where they are, as the small stone structure with ‘Almunecar’ on it is almost invisible and is virtually unreadable anyway.

It is the intention of the ayuntamiento to bring more visitors to the town. There is nowhere to park, the Caletilla is a disgrace (10 months work? Yeh, right!) the town is looking dirty and unkempt.

Normally in August teams have been out tidying up to make everything look pretty for our rich and famous guests, but not this year. There are weeds and shrubs growing in gutters, dead leaves and grass along roadsides etc. However, this covers the yellow lines, meaning people then park there! Despite the potential income from hundreds of parking fines, the Policia Local do not seem to take any action.

Despite there being cars parked everywhere, the beaches are much quieter than would be anticipated during the holiday season. Maybe the bubble has burst. Maybe people are thinking why bother coming here when they’ll spend all day driving round looking for a parking space that isn’t there.

And yet, there they are – another photo opportunity for some vacuous project….

You should be so lucky, come and look at Shabby Salobrena. This could be a little gem with just a few sensible tweaks. We spend lots of money on opening up spaces, making bendy pathways and yet the streets are filthy, weeds abound most buildings and lots of dog poo. Why would tourists return?
