The Guardia Civil arrested three individuals, all aged 27, in Granada and charged them with receiving stolen property, after they came across their van that had been involved in an accident.

The back of the van was loaded with copper and when the occupants of the vehicle were finally found, they were unable to explain where they had obtained it from.

A traffic police patrol based in Guadix came across the van on the A-92 within the municipality of Huétor Santillán on the Murcia-bound lanes on Thursday last week. The vehicle had left the road for unknown reasons.

Thinking that they would just be offering assistance, it turns out that the occupants had abandoned the vehicle and that it had no legal paperwork. What it did have were 78 copper bars or rods, 8-cm in diametre and 2-m long, along with tools for cutting it, work clothes belonging to an electricity utility company and work-in-progress signage.

Well, it didn’t take long before it become obvious to the officers that it had been half-inched (stolen) and that the missing occupants had been passing themselves off as electricity-company workers transporting it without raising suspicions… if they hadn’t come off the road and abandoned it, that is.

Whilst the officers were organising a tow-truck to take the van away. Interestingly, the tow-truck company said that they had received calls from people who said that they needed to recover their broken-down van and its load and that they were willing to pay money so that the police didn’t hear about it.

So, once the van was deposited in the yard of the tow-truck company, the Guardia Civil staked the yard out… Just past midnight on the 24th, officers observed the arrival of three individuals in a rental van. They got out of the vehicle and started wandering around the immediate vicinity next to the yard.

The officers pounced, identified the three suspects and questioning began concerning the van to which there were no credible answers, which led to their arrest. One had said that he had simply picked up the other two to whom the van belonged in order to collect it. A police court released them pending trial.
