Escape Room Real Horror

Do you recall the case of a incident in an escape room that went horribly wrong and resulted in a customer receiving extensive burns?

Well, it took place in June, 2022 in the town of Cájar in the Vega de Granada in this kind of horror entertainment set up in Villa Amparo, where people have to solve clues in order to be able to get out of the room.

A court has now found guilty one of the workers there and the owner of the villa of gross negligence and sentenced them to 2-years’ imprisonment. There is a further 2-year ban from running or participating in such an establishment or any public office. They will also have to pay court costs.

The 42-year-old woman had gone there with friends but as a result of her injuries she was in an induced coma for a month followed a further six months in the ICU belonging to the Burns Unit at the Hospital Universitario Virgen del Rocío in Sevilla, as she had burns to 40% of her body.

Another employee, whose task it was to scare visitors and who poured gasoline on the other guests was acquitted over a lack of evidence, because he did not use a cigarette lighter or cause injuries to others. He does have to pay a third of the court costs, however.

The ruling considers it proven that the facilities lacked any type of opening license or construction project, and operated with a total absence of safety measures, emergency lights, adequate fire extinguishers, or prevention & evacuation protocols. The participants were also not informed of the real risks of the game, nor did they sign a consent form.

During the activity, the actors separated the clients. One of the workers took the victim to the living room, sat her in a chair, tied her up, and poured a liquid over her using a white jug.

Although this liquid was gasoline and the victim repeatedly warned of the strong smell of petrol, the employee ignored the warning and used a lighter near her up to three times, causing a flare-up that engulfed the woman.

The court found that the owner is held responsible for creating and permitting an extreme risk by authorising the use of gasoline and fire in an enclosed space without supervision, without training for his employees, and without informing the users.

The employee, on the other hand, acted with “apathy” by pouring the liquid and repeatedly flicking the lighter without checking that it would not ignite.

The prosecutor described the facilities as a “mousetrap,” while another friend of the victim recounted that he was in the same room as her when the events occurred.

He was separated from the group and handcuffed inside a chest. From there, he heard them put her on the chair and his friend protesting about the smell of gasoline. Upon hearing the clicks of the lighter and the subsequent flash, he looked out and saw the woman on fire. As the workers assisted the victim, the man remained locked in the chest:

“I was running out of air and there was a lot of smoke. I screamed and kicked until I was able to get out with the help of my friends,” he testified.
