The Granada Provincial Law Courts considers that there is sufficient evidence to head to trial concerning ex-mayor of Jun, Aurora Suárez Muñoz (PSOE) and two others.
The other two are an officer belonging to the Policía Local and a Town Hall clerk, whom, together with the ex-mayor face charges of embezzlement of public funds and, in the case of the officer, also for alleged document forgery.
The case has been under investigation for nearly two years but now the judge considers it “circumstantially proven” that between January 2022 and May 2023, the officer collected “significant amounts” of money for overtime hours he did not work, and that the performance of these services was “falsely certified.”
According to the investigative work these acts were “permitted” by both the former mayor of the municipality and the former secretary-comptroller.
Following a change of administration in 2023, Mayor Pilar Jiménez Tortolero came across a staggering amount of overtime hours supposedly worked by the municipal policeman. The officer had claimed up to 205 overtime hours in a single month; i.e, equivalent to nearly seven hours overtime every single day, or a series of back-to-back, 24-hour shifts.
Naturally, with this overtime money, he allegedly earnt double, triple, or quadruple his ordinary base salary. In total, as verified by the Guardia Civil, he accumulated 976 overtime hours.
In 2022 and 2023, he received between 38,000 and 49,000 euros in addition to his standard salary for these services.
The municipal-police officer drew up the reports and certified his own services, completely lacking effective supervision or control. Furthermore, many of the billed hours overlapped with his regular work schedule, his vacation days, and even periods when the suspect was formally on medical leave!
