Miguel Ávila Padial

Convergencia Andaluza (CA) has demanded explanations following the disappearance of the banner put up by the family of Miguel Ávila Padial outside the Casa de La Cultura in Almuñécar.

Now, for those of you who never met Miguel Ávila, he was the first democratically elected Mayor of Almuñécar following the death of Franco in 1975, He was Mayor from 1979 to 1983.

He later teamed up with Juan Carlos Benavides. Benny, as most know him, was the leader of Convergencia Andaluza (CA) from its formation in 2003 until he took a back seat after going through treatment for breast cancer.

Miguel Ávila, who died in June 2020, was also a high-school teacher for almost four decades and much respected in Almuñécar. He had the very difficult task of bringing Almuñécar into line with the Spanish Constitution of 1978 and setting the municipality on firm democratic foundations. He was probably the most important democratically elected mayor that Almuñécar has ever had

Now you know who Miguel was and what relation he had with the CA, if you didn’t already.

In the same month that he died, a motion was put forward in a Plenary Meeting of the Town Council to name the Casa de La Cultura after him, which was approved. However the then Mayor, Trinidad Herrera (PP) suggested instead just naming the street after him; the one leading to the high school (Antigua Sexi) where he used to teach. This was not take up and remains named Calle Instituto.

Back to the banner which recalled the need to comply with the agreement approved on June the 30th, 2020, but now, somebody has taken it down and the CA and many others are far from happy about it.

“The issue is not only who removed the banner, but why an agreement that was backed by the political groups represented in the Town Council remains unfulfilled,” read the CA communiqué.

So far, to our knowledge, the PP Mayor, Juan Ruiz Joya, has made no comment about it’s disappearance.
