It’s Time for Artepeazos!

For the third year running, Salobreña will have its Artepeazos; this year running from the 21st to the 31st of this month.

There is street art, like the huge mural of woman’s face on the back wall of the old medical centre, as well as other murals and sculptures, exhibitions, music, guided tours, and activities to get involved in throughout the town.

The event organiser, Luiz Villaescusa, explained, “It’s going to be ten intense days of activity.”

One of the highlights will once again be the sculpture symposium in El Parque La Fuente, where four artists will be working live throughout almost the entire festival.

Among them is the Turkish sculptor, Abdulkadir Hocaoglu, who lives in Italy. The town where he lives is an internationally renowned centre for marble sculptures.

There is also a British artist, Michela Tabaton-Osbourne, who also lives in the same Italian town of Carrara. They are joined by José Manuel Rodríguez Tigueros from last year’s festival and a new artist to Salobreña’s Artepeazo, Miguel Fernández.

The sculptures can be viewed as they are being created in the said park right up to the last day of the festival.

Returning to mural art, amongst the invited artists is Pello 0139, the only artist to have participated in one way or another in all three editions of Artepeazos, given his residence in Salobreña.

This time round, he is working in the Plaza Ferrán Ramírez, next to Avenida Federico García Lorca. The urban-artist, Taquen, will also participate, with his mural stretching across the eastern part of Salobreña, near Blas Infante. Manolo Mesa will create a mural on the Casa de la Cultura in La Caleta.

Onthe subject of murals, Pablo Zabala will create a new mural and restore part of the mural in La Guardia, which was damaged by the storm in February.

There will be live music performed by Varieté Quintana on the day of the inauguration and cultural spaces like Magnolia and Acalencá will be the venue for group exhibitions, performances, recitals, workshops, and artistic gatherings.

Among the highlights is the exhibition Identity in Conflict, a group show featuring local artists; the presentation of the comic book The Other World by Enrique Bonet; painting and drawing workshops led by Francisco Olivares and Zumo de Granada; and a printmaking workshop organised by Art Caravan.

Of course, there will be the established guided tours of murals and artworks from previous editions, offering a first-hand look at the interventions and opportunities to interact with the artists.

The programme will also include participatory art installations, such as the photographic one on Calle Reina inspired by the local tradition of ‘bringing a chair to the door,’ as well as concerts and musical events.

The big day before the event’s closure is Saturday the 30th, when there will be a guided tour of the Old Town and the Castle, ending in a concert of experimental classical music by the Bandalia Trio in the castle itself.
