These volunteers will be planting: wild olive trees (acebuches), kermes oaks (coscojas), holm oaks (encinas), junipers (enebros), hawthorn (majuelo), Spanish broom (gallombas) mastic trees (lentiscos), nettle trees (almeces), wild roses (rosales silvestres), turpentine trees (cornicabra), and Mediterranean buckthorn (aladierno)
The volunteers belong to the Asociación Árboles contra el Cambio Climático en Granada and their project, Plantando Futuro is funding with a grant of 18,814 euros from Fundación Unicaja.
As for the land, “It is an area completely lacking in trees; it’s an elongated hill with two ravines on either side. We aim to improve its tree cover and biodiversity, transforming it into a place where local residents have a green, healthy space for walking,” explained the association’s representatives.
The work is being carried out in several stages. The first is an awareness campaign, involving speaking with junior and high schools, residents for the elderly, and local associations/clubs in Monachil to speak about the project and see if they wish to collaborate.
The second stage will take place in autumn, which is when the planting will begin: “We intend to first mark the spots using a ‘spider-excavator’ which is ideal for the terrain.” Schoolchildren will do the planting during the week and volunteers on weekends.
But it’s not just about planting them, as they have to be protected during at least three years but Unicaja Foundation has told them they can request a renewal of the project to maintain them.
The association Trees Against Climate Change in Granada, which has 230 members, pointed out that, fires and the agricultural abandonment have left hundreds of hectares devoid of trees in the municipality of Monachil.
