The Almuñécar Councilor for Tourism, Beatriz González Orce, announced the completion of the installation of beacons at pedestrian crossings throughout the municipality.
In other words, they have equipped the road network with new ‘smart’ crossings, setting up a total of 14 installations along Paseo de San Cristóbal, Carrera de la Concepción, and thePaseo del Altillo. These consist of both single and double crossings; you have to cross two lanes along the Carrera de la Concepción.
The systems use LED lighting which activate to improve the visibility of the crossing and warn drivers of pedestrians.
Councillor González Orce pointed out that “This type of infrastructure helps reinforce our municipality’s image as a safe, accessible, and sustainable tourist destination, in line with strategic goals to improve urban quality and the visitor experience.”
Proseñal got the contract for the installation, for a total of 96,558 euros, and which should take two months to complete.
Where did the funds come from? From the EU, of course, as part of the Next Generation funds.
Editorial comment: If they controlled the zebra crossing on La Carrera, where it meets the Avenida de Andalucía and the main junction by the bus station, it would be a start. Because at present, everybody screeches to a halt on a Friday market days, as streams of pedestrians saunter across whilst drivers watch their green light ticking away but unable to use it.
