Paediatrician for La Herradura

One of the hot topics in the village remains to be the lack of a paediatrician giving full coverage.

The local PSOE, as well as complaining about the new-entrance-junction for La Herradura still being dead in the water has reiterated its condemnation of the regional health service’s cuts to paediatric care in the village.

According to the socialists, the paediatrician currently attends “only two or three days a week, with no fixed schedule,” and there are even weeks where “no care is provided even on the scheduled day.”

There is even a reduction in surgery hours when a paediatrician is present. Party Spokesman, Álvaro López, warned, “It cannot be allowed that even when the paediatrician is present, care is limited: we have verified that on paediatric days, no appointments are given between 10:15h. and 12:45h.”

He went on to claim, “When children in La Herradura fall ill on a day without paediatric services, parents must take them to the A&E at the Almuñécar Centro de Salud, where they are treated by a standard GP (doctor) as there is no paediatrician at the A&E.”

The PSOE pointed out that they had taken this problem to a Plenary Meeting on October the 30th last year, with a motion to restore the previous coverage but it was rejected by the Mayor’s party.

According to the socialists, the Mayor himself announced a year ago that the service “would be restored immediately,” so they are demanding that he “keeps his word and fights for the rights of the children of La Herradura.”

The regional health service, SAS has taken a number of body blows for failures, such as the breast-cancer-scan results scandal which caused a major political crises. The fact is that there are many paediatricians who have passed out of university, seeking a job in the SAS but instead have to search for a job elsewhere in Spain or even abroad.

Editorial comment: where would the money come from, you might ask? Get rid of a few politicians on the payroll and there will be more than enough money for the public health service.
