From Coma to Throne Bearer

A man from La Herradura who spent two months in a coma after a cycling accident has been struggling with rehabilitation for four years, but he set himself a goal and achieved it.

Ernesto Barbero set his mind, and body, to participating this Semana Santa in a procession as a throne bearer, which is not easy even for somebody in good bodily health, let alone somebody struggling with limb coordination.

He took his place, putting his shoulder under the Santísimo Cristo del Sepulcro, walking with the throne this Viernes Santo (Good Friday) during several, daunting minutes.

His mother was there to watch him as she had just sung a traditional Easter lament (a saeta) from her balcony on Calle Real.

Ernesto is determined not to stop fighting to recovery until he can once again be a full-time bearer (horquillero) and complete an entire penitential procession.

Enhorabuena!
