Hiker Rescued on La Maroma

The Guardia Civil, mountain-rescue team rescued a hiker in his late 50s yesterday afternoon in the area of La Maroma peak.

More specificially known as El Contadero, the area lies within the municipality of Alhama de Granada.

It was around 14.00h that the mountain-rescue service in Granada, GREIM received a call out from the Emergency coordination centre, 112, saying that a hiker was injured with a sprained ankle whilst he was descending a mountain trail leading to El Robledal from Pico de La Maroma, and was unable to continue.

Two GREIM team members were sent, along with the Guardia-Civil helicopter crew from its base in Armilla. The Guardia Civil also despatched one of its ground patrols which was in  Zafarraya, who walked five kilometres to reach the victim and move him to where the helicopter would have access to him.

They examined him and put his leg in a splint and brought him out onto clear ground so that he could be winched up into the hovering chopper. Once onboard, he was flown to the PTS Hospital in Granada for medical treatment.

Editorial comment: that was a costly mobilisation of Guardia Civil resources for just one sprained ankle.

I hate to be so boring. But hikers, cyclists, electric cyclist should really have insurance. While not covering the full cost of these incidents. It might give cause to better thought and self consideration. In fairness. That cost is likely to be far less then sugar cane or other fires.
