Almuñécar Pet Policing

Almuñécar's Concillor for the Environment, Lucía González López, announced that her department had recently launched an inspection campaign to enforce responsible pet ownership.

Failure to comply with these bylaws governing pets within the municipality could set you back between €500 to €10,000. Included amongst the things that pet owners can be fined for is uncontrolled breeding.

Savage Dog on a Lead

So, inspectors will check that your mutt or moggy is microchipped, has its rabies vaccinations up to date, and that dogs are kept on leads in public spaces.

It’s not clear whether they will be municipal police officer or just town-hall staff but the former is the most likely as only they can issue fines.

Whilst intervention for breaking the said bylaws will be mostly informative (tell you off rather than fining), there have already been three fines handed out, each for walking dogs off-the-lead, which contravenea Andalusian law.

At the moment, these inspectons are being carried out in the town centre, but it will soon be extend to rural, outlying areas.

Is Almuñécar the worst town in Spain for dog mess on the streets? It certainly seems so.

Their time would be better spent, handing out fines for not cleaning up after hours of fouls a public space or for diluting the dog urine from lampposts etc. The number of dog owners who don’t carry water is unbelievable.

Always good to give out orders from on high. Try sorting out free running dogs in villages and the Campo So the policia will not only have to see children across the roads outside schools. They will also have to sort of doggy issues. I’d rather they sorted out the owners that do not clear up doggy mess on the pavements. Still the Councillor for the environment has an eye for the headlines. Are elections due soon?
