Drug-Runner Impunity?

Residents can be forgiven for thinking that the Guardia Civil are doing nothing about the narco-RIBs, bobbing about in La Herradura bay with apparent impunity.

The Guardia Civil had a police vehicle in the Marina del Este, near the marina entrance yesterday morning, whilst, apparently, several drug-runner RIBs took shelter just beyong the Marina del Este beach. They appear to be coming and going, so why can’t the Guardia sent a patrol vessel to apprehend them?

Anyway, the Mayor Ruiz Joya wrings his hands and says that it is bad for tourism: “We cannot wait to act until a misfortune occurs,” adding, “The safety of citizens and lives of officer are at stake.”

(Rough translation: This morning, 4 ribs were at least an hour off the coast opposite the Paseo Reina Sofia apartments, clearly visible to the naked eye from the promenade, but no action from law enforcement was seen).

This is truly a disgrace for the Spanish state. One can’t help but wonder who is on the payroll of the drug barons. What also baffles me is the absence of investigative journalism. None of the major nationwide TV channels or newspapers seem interested in the story or in confronting those at the top with some uncomfortable questions. How can that be? Is this blatant public flaunting by criminals something that is only new to us here in Almuñécar, while in the rest of the country it has become so normal that it barely raises a yawn? I am deeply disappointed by the failure of the authorities who are supposed to protect us.
