In the summer of 2024 a fire incinerated parts of the municipal hinterland in Almuñécar and La Herradura. Well, compensation is still awaited.
For this reason the Town Council has set aside an initial budget of 100,000 euros, which can be increased if needs require.
The Junta de Andalucia, through the General Secretariat for Agriculture, Livestock, and Food, has sent the favorable report, which amounts to authorisation. This allows the Almuñécar Town Council to “exercise powers that, while not inherently its own, it assumes as a matter of social justice and support for the municipality’s economic engine.”
In other words, it’s not really the Town Council’s responsibility to cover the costs for damages but the Junta’s report allows them to take such a step.
The Mayor was full of praisesfor the Junta (run by his party) and his municipal administration, describing the Town Council’s support as an “unwavering commitment to the farmers and families who suffered the devastating consequences of the forest fire.”
By the time that you read this, the basis for how it will be paid out will have been established, for which reason Mayor Ruiz Joya advised affected farmers to get their paperwork together ready for submitting.
