Gale Savages Beach

The first major gale this year has once again left its mark on Playa Granada, (Motril) leaving it with a sizeable ledge at the shoreline.

Despite the breakwater at Punta del Santo, (or because of it?) waves carved out a one-metre drop in the sand right next to Hoyo 19 – we reported a week or so back on how precariously the veteran chiringuito now sits, perched above the shoreline.

Mayor Luisa García Chamorro, said that the Town Council is closely monitoring the gale’s evolution: “From the Town Council, we are carrying out continuous monitoring of this severe storm episode and, out of prudence, we will wait until next Tuesday when it concludes to rigorously evaluate its real impact,” she explained.

Mayor Chamorro acknowledged that gales continue to leave noticeable damage to the beach even after the construction of the breakwater. However, she stressed that it will be necessary to wait for technical reports before making decisions.

She said that once they have the reports, if necessary, they would urge the Coastal Authority (Demarcación de Costas) to act and also adopt the necessary solutions.

Anybody who has lived in the area longer than a dog’s watch will know that Playa Granada suffered year after year from the onslaught of westerly gales. Every autumn and winter, the area between the Chiringuito Bonobo and the Hotel Impressive was scooped out by the waves, undermining at one point the hotel’s gardened area.

That’s why they built the breakwater…

The Chairman of the Association of Beach Businessmen of the Costa Tropical, Francisco Trujillo, pointed out that there is concern regarding the state of the beach following the investment made in the breakwater’s construction, although he insists they trust the situation will stabilise over time.
