Well, the large landowner in Nerja/Maro, Larios, kept its word and has moved in with heavy machinery, demolishing structures where it plans to build its luxury development.
Eighty families are affected; some losing their homes, with the end of around 400 land leases. Larios wants to build luxury housing and a golf course, turning the abandoned sugar mill into a luxury hotel — one of three planned.

Last Friday, the first dwelling was demolished on the Maro vega, with all the furnishings and belongings inside, without prior warning, according to the social-media platform, Acción por Maro y su Agricultura.
The Town Hall is ecstatic over the planned development because this means lots of money for the municipal coffers, whilst land conservationists and leaseholders want this last stretch of undeveloped land in Nerja kept that way.
Environmentalists point out that with the growing lack of water as climate change picks up speed, the laying down of a golf green is incredibly short sighted. Even if recycled water is used, that recycled water will be needed to grow the crops to feed us, rather than to provide a playground for the few, many consider.
