Scam Kidnapping via Whatsapp

There has been a cruel scam in which two men, aged 20 and 26, contacted a woman in a town in Granada via WhatsApp, impersonating her son.

This was just the beginning of a new case of the “son in distress” scam. In this instance, the Guardia Civil discovered that €6,500, swindled from a woman in the province of Granada, had ended up in their bank accounts.

Through messages, they convinced her that he (her son) had lost his mobile phone and that, from now on, they should communicate using that number.

Shortly afterward, she received a call in which a man with a foreign accent asked her not to hang up and told her that her son had been kidnapped, demanding a series of bank transfers to accounts that they would provide, is she wanted him to be in released.

To pressure her, they even told her that if she wanted proof that the kidnapping was real, they could cut off one of her son’s hands and send it to her.

Faced with these threats, the victim immediately went to her bank and made several transfers totalling €6,500 to the accounts given to her over the phone. After making the transferrs, they contacted her again to inform her that her son was going to be released.

Upon returning from the bank, she met with him and realised it had all been a scam, so she reported the incident to the Guardia Civil.

Investigators from the Guardia Civil based in Motril took on the case and discovered that the money had ended up in several bank accounts belonging to two individuals residing in the province of Valencia, specifically in Paiporta and Catarroja.

So they requested support from their counterparts at the Valencia Command to locate the account holders.
