A customer in a bar in Los Palacios y Villafranca in Sevilla asked for two beers and two tapas (you pay for them in Sevilla). Upon receiving them, he asked for mayonnaise or ketchup but was told that there wasn’t any.
His reaction at first seemed normal and he responded, “No problem,” but he should have added, “But there is going to be,” as things soon went pear shaped.
It was 19.14h on that fateful day and the perfectly reasonable customer was sat on the outside terrace. He got up, went across the road to a gasolinera, bought a bottle of water, emptied it, filled it with gasoline…
You can guess how this is going to turn out, right? He returned to his seat, beckoned over the waiter, repeated his request for ketchup but received the same negative response, so he went inside and emptied the bottle of gasoline over the bar and set light to it.
The result was an fireball. Miraculously, nobody was hurt — there were even kids inside. This action was recorded on the bar’s security camera, so there is no doubt what happened inside the bar.
He then walked out but was caught by two lads who had been sat outside and had witnessed the whole thing, and who held onto him until the police arrived.
The damage in the bar is estimated at between 7,000 and 10,000 euros but the owner, who was very affected emotionally by the event, said the money is the least of it, because what if people had been injured.
Actually, somebody was injured and that was the culprit, who suffered burns to one of his hands (and probably his eyebrows). The Guardia Civil marched him off to the nearest medical centre before throwing him into their holding cells.
