A resident of Málaga is under investigation after having left his dog in a van in the heat of August which resulted in its death from heat exhaustion.
Although the incident occurred on August 18th the case was delayed before reaching the Málaga Environmental Prosecutor’s Office, which will determine whether it is an administrative or criminal offence.
It came to light after a couple of people phoned the 092 emergency room, reporting a dog inside a vehicle with all the windows closed and parked on a street in Puerto de La Torre. Witnesses said that the labrador was having convulsions.
Rescued by the municipal police, the dog was taken to a municipal veterinary clinic, where attempts were made to revive her, but all efforts were in vain, and the dog ultimately died.
According to the person who notified the local police, the animal had been inside the vehicle for more than two hours. The owner, who arrived at the scene just as officers were trying to enter, initially stated that he had only been gone for five minutes to run errands. However, upon hearing from witnesses, he eventually admitted that he had forgotten the animal was inside the van.
The dog owner was charged but not arrested under the Animal Protection and Welfare Law for negligence resulting in death. However, officers from the Policía Local’s Nature Protection Group (Gruprona) are continuing the investigation at the time that this article was written.
That day, the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) had issued a yellow warning for high temperatures in many towns in the province, including the city of Málaga. The police requested an estimation of the temperature at scene of this incident at that hour. With this information gathered, the case has moved onto criminal proceedings.
