Municpal Animal Shelter Controvery

The Spokeswoman for the local opposition party, IU has criticised Mayor Chamorro over a promised investment in the Municipal Animal Shelter, which has not materialised.

Spokeswoman Inma Concepción Omiste Fernández said that she is disappointed that even after several months of this pledge of putting 150,000 euros into the municipal installations, the work has not even gone out to tender, let alone begun.

It is not only the fact that the increase in kennels or general increase in available space hasn’t come about, but also that the Mayor has continued with the employment of a company to run the shelter, specialised in pest control (rats/insects) without the “minimum standards for animal welfare.”

IU-Verdes Equo (to give the coalition structure its full title) criticises the bad state of the installations, the deficit in resources and the “lack of interest by the governing party (PP), headed by Mayor García Chamorro.

The Spokeswoman also suggests that the Town Hall opts for grants that are available for the control of stray-cat colonies; something that it has not done in previous years despite such a motion having been approved in a Plenary Meeting of the Town Council.

Finally, she stated that despite businesses and associations interested in running the Municipal Animal Shelter, the lease condition prevented them from competing, meaning that the contract automatically fell back on the present company running it.
