The Feria de Loja concluded yesterday, but not before their firework display caused a fire in an area of wild canes.
The Policía Local and fire service were tied up until half four in the morning putting it out, explained the Mayor of Loja, Joaquín Camacho.

The fire broke out a little before one in the morning on wasteland covered with wild cane in the area known as El Bujeo, which lies just behind Avenida de España and close to the river.
“We had made provisions for a detachment of the fire service to keep an eye on this area, which is why putting the fire out was so efficient,” said Mayor Camacho. Infoca helped out by refilling the Loja fire service’s fire trucks.
Around 1,500 sq/m of dry grass and wild cane were destroyed by fire.
Editorial comment: sending up fireworks, whose very name contains the word ‘fire,’ is an absolutely ridiculous thing to do in August. What was the Mayor thinking?
Isn’t it about time that, given the very negative effect that these detonations have on pets and people with autism, fireworks are banned, especially during the fire season?
