Wave of Forest Fires are Over

The Central Government announced yesterday that the wave of fires, affecting mostly Galicia and Castilla-León this August, was over.

“This tragic episode in the history of our country; of large, simultaneous, forest fires during 20 days in an important area of our country, has concluded,” said the Director General of Protección Civil y Emergencias, Virginia Barcones.

She estimated that 300,000 hectares of land had been destroyed by fire. This figure is pending revision upon receiving more information from the regional governments of Galicia and Castilla-Leon.

Of the total of 93 fires (39 of which covered more than 500 hectares each) only three are still active but at a Level-Two category.

As for the cost in human lives, four people have died and 48 injured. Furthermore 35,917 people had to be temporarily evacuated from the path of the flames.
