Kayaks against the Rocks

A few dozen holidaymakers in kayaks found themselves literally up against the rocks in La Herradura after a sudden change in weather conditions.

Fortunately, they were rescued by a leisure company that hires out such craft in small motorised dinghies (RIBs), as well as an angler in his own boat.

This incident took place around 13.00h Monday afternoon when in a question of minutes the wind picked up with a corresponding change in sea state that played havoc with the families in their kayaks, tipping some over.

Some of the adults and children whose kayaks capsized found themselves in the water up against the rocks, creating anxiety amongst the parents and fear amongst their kids.

The owner of Varadero de La Herradura sent out three of his craft, which amongst them managed to pick up about 50 people, relaying them to the beach, starting with the women and children. A sports fisherman also participated, diving into the sea to reach them

With everybody safe and sound back on land the rescuers took the kayaks into tow and retrieved them as well.

The Asociación de Pescadores Deportivos Costa Tropical, one of whose members took part in the rescue mission, pointed out that it was not the first time that their members had participated in rescue operations in the area.

“Anglers should be present in the ZEC Punta de La Mona and in all the Zonas de Especial Conservación that might be set up in the future; because of their ‘marine culture’ as well as their contribution to safety on the sea,” read their communiqué.
