There was a warning issued by the Cúllar Town Hall of a possible sabotage against its municipal swimming pool after losing one million litres of water.
According to a report filed with the Policía Local, “Apparently, the water-recycling pump’s shut-off valves were tampered with, specifically by opening the drainage valve for motor number one.”
The Town Council decided to change the lock on the recycling-machinery room, believing that somebody who no longer has anything to do with the Town Hall had a copy of the original key.
On the morning of the discovery, maintenance workers woke Mayor Ana Belén Martínez López to tell her that the pool was half empty after having lost 1,000 cubic metres of water!
She screamed round to the pool to see for herself and lo, there it was… missing! She said afterwards that she doesn’t believe that it was a human error as the drainage valve is hardly ever touched unless you’re backwashing, as anybody who has a pool knows.
Besides the lost water, nothing else was missing, furthermore, the access door had not been forced. This happened on a Tuesday and by Thursday the pool had been reopened now suitably brimming.
The Mayor has fiercely defended the maintenance workers, whose task it is to keep the pool water clean suitable for swimming saying, “There was no mistake on their part.”
