For beachgoers on Playa Granada, the rescue drama as it unrolled might have seemed like the real thing, but it was just a drill - an important one – but a drill, nevertheless.
Two young people jumped off the new breakwater, which is still under construction, by the way. One of them lies unconscious in the water, stunned by the impact against something. The companion tries to help but has also suffered a fractured arm.

In a question of minutes, lifesavers approached on their jet-ski and ran them over killing them stone dead… OK, I just made that last bit up, so let’s rewind... the lifeguards approached them on their jet-ski and soon have them safe and sound on the beach receiving treatment.
The drill had been organised by the Servicio de Socorrismo de Motril, together with the Cooperación 2005 company which manages Motril’s lifeguard service along its beaches.
The object of the drill was two fold; test the response and efficiency of the lifeguards and their equipment, and give a live demonstration to those on the beach of how dangerous it could be diving off the breakwater, which is strictly forbidden, by the way, and could fetch a hefty fine.
