As the heat of summer toasts the pavements, the idea of taking a dip in the municipal swimming pool is very tantilising... But wait, there isn’t one, or better said, there is but it’s in a ruinous state.
A feasibility study was commisioned by the previous municipal adminstration in 2019, just before the pandemic hit.

That study clearly stated that the pool is not viable in any way, whether managed by the Town Hall or any other public entity, or even by a private company, for that matter.
At the moment the building is bricked up after vandals ripped through it and the pool itself looks like a rubbish tip.
It’s not viable because the money needed to put it right, plus the funds needed to maintain it, are beyond the purse of the Town Council.
The Mayor said back in 2021, suitably clad with a facemask, that there was no demand for a swimming pool in Dúrcal or the surrounding villages. Others would disagree and want it up and running even if it is at a loss.
Mayor Julio Prieto (PSOE) said that running it at a loss would be creating a hole in the administration that ends up harming other municipal services.
His answer is to find out how much it would cost to put a slab over the pool basin with the aim of using the space for a different purposes, such as a gym for the adjacent school but also for senior citizens.
The fact is that the pool cost 1.7m to build in 2009 with the lion’s share coming from the Junta (1.4m) and the Town Hall had to cover the rest, which it never did because the world economic crisis was growling in the wings.
