Two-Wheeled Bandit

One thief used an arguably perfect camouflage to carry out his light-fingered trade; he used a wheelchair.

We’re hard-wired to think of people with disabiities, such as wheelchair users, as decent and honest (which they most likely are), so when a thief finds himself a wheelchair and wheels himself into a shop, if you do keep an eye on him, it is to offer assistance if needed.

Anyway, enough preamble… This thief ‘worked’ with an accomplice upon entering a small supermarket in the city of Granada.

The first part of the 2-stage plan worked perfectly, which was grab two bottles of decent whiskey which were hidden under the blanket over the wheelchair occupant’s knees. Stage two was to walk out of the supermarket… Well, roll out of the supermarket, better said.

Trouble was that the owners of the self-service shop was not taken in and had kept an eye on the couple. “Stop right there, please!” was the command, which was when the ‘proverbial’ hit the fan.

The wheelchair user sprang up and together with the accomplice laid into the owners, leaving them in need of medical attention.

Well, a patrol belonging to the Policía Nacional was soon at the scene and arrested both of them. Even before the handcuffs come out, it was apparent that the man in the wheelchair was in no need of it.

Both men, aged 27 and 30, are foreign, illegal residents and have criminal records.

Prior to this, but over in Córdoba, one thief made a bit of a name for himself using this ruse; 30-year-old Luciano was arrested at last after his fifth and final ‘mounted outing.’ (See accompanying photo.)
