Mega Solar Plant Cancelled

The mega, solar-plant project that was to go up on the Vega de Granada has ceased to exist after the developers threw in the towel.

As a result the Junta de Andalucía has suspended the project three years down the line. The project had been declared of public utility in December 2024, but that decision has now been revoked.

According to sources at the Junta, Granada Solar 133 has decided to abandon the projects for the Ence Atarfe I, Ence Atarfe II, and Ence Atarfe III photovoltaic plants because “they cannot be executed due to a regulatory incompatibility with the evacuation line of other production plants,” which prevents them from developing the plants. Or expressed in shorter terms, the company, Magnon, considers that the initiative is” technically unviable.”

Therefore, after relinquishing their rights before the Junta, they have requested the return of the guarantee deposit that they had provided.

The company will stand far from idle as it formed an alliance with two energy consulting firms; CPPI, a Canadian pension fund that manages approximately $590 billion to analyse the development of an e-methanol plant at a complex they own in Puertollano, Ciudad Real.

The problem is that the Junta strips local municipalities of their authority over these projects on their land by declaring them “of Public Utility.” This is what has happened concerning the water-bottling plant in Dúrcal where springs have run dry, arguably because the bottling plant is sucking out too much water from the water table.

It is also the problem with the mega plant on the vega of Granada where local farmers and municipal councils have tried to stop it going ahead because it meant running HT lines over their productive olive trees. Locals formed the Plataforma en Defensa de la Vega de Granada y su Entorno to fight against it.

The land belonging to the affected farmers, some 155 hectares did not want the evacuation line (HT line running over their crops and insisted that the Junta either disallowed the power line or forced the company to run it beneath the surface; i.e., underground. The affected municipalities were Vegas del Genil and Santa Fe.
