Aircraft Propeller Monument

The Port Authorities and the Spanish Air Force station in Motril have tightened their fraternal bond with the donation of an aircraft propeller as a monument.

It has been placed in the Plaza del EVA-9 within the port area – that’s the name of the Air Force unit based in Motril; i.e., Escuadrón de Vigilancia Aérea-9.

The 4-bladded propeller comes from a Lockheed P-3 Orion, which is a 4-engined, turboprop, anti-submarine and maritime surveillance aircraft. In other words, it does the same task as the RAF’s Nimrod, used to do.

The EVA-9 has been based in Motril for the last 54 years (1971-2025) and it is this squadron that runs the radar installations above motril on the Lújar road.

This ceremony is part of the commemorative activities to mark the 20 years since the establishment of the independent port authorities in Motril in 2005 – before it used to be under the Almería Port Authorities.
