Street Partially Reopened

If you live in Almuñécar you have probably been watching the progress of the work being carried out on street linking Avenida Juan Carlos in front of Hotel Bahía to Avenida de Andalucia.

Rumours that they are going to carry out The Battle of the Somme reenactment there are unfounded and that contrary to what it looks like, there will soon be a nice tarmacked Calle Granada back in place… but not yet!

No, what the Councillor for Urban Development is doing is temporarily reopening the said street but to pedestrians only during this weekend with the Semana Santa hordes already upon us. After that, the barbed wire, trenches and machine-gun positions will be reinstalled.

The Chairman of the Mancomunidad, Rafael Caballero, was accompanied by the said Councillor, Javier García, who were inspecting the progress of the roadworks, so that they could be seen to wisely confer with lesser mortals, such as the works foreman and the company boss, Alejandro Jurado.

Chairman Caballero said that this street has not had the new rain-drainage networks installed before, although it has been dug up more times than Norman Bates’ mother… Just in case that is confusing; he didn’t mention the Pyscho reference, we did.

He apologised for the delay in the completion of the roadworks, pointing out that the constant rain during March had delayed things, meaning that it missed its planned termination date before the arrival of Easter Friday (Viernes de Dolores) but that it should be ready by the end of the coming Tuesday so that it can be reopened to traffic on Wednesday.

So there you have it! This weekend, pedestrian passage only and by Wednesday cars can use it too.
