At last it seems that Motril Town Hall has sorted out who is going to collect the rubbish from its streets and empty the rubbish hoppers.
They awarded a contract, worth 148m euros covering a period of 12 years and it will come into effect on the 1st of April. Evidently, nobody pointed out that the 1st of April is April Fools’ Day, but never mind.
The new system has two stages, according to the Vice-Mayor and Head of Calidad Urbana, Juan Fernando Hernández: “This contract is a watershed moment in urban management of waste as it introduces innovative measures that guarantee a cleaner urban environment.”
He added, “It’s been months of hard work, planning, meetings and problem solving, but we can finally say that the 1st of April will be a key day for Motril.”
Leaving out reams of self congratulations over heroic deeds, we skip through the communique to a few paragraphs down with, “11-million euros have been spent on latest-generation, new machinery. There will be more street sweepers, high-pressure water jets, bowser lorries, tractors for beach cleaning and electric vehicles,” said the Vice-Mayor.
Cleaning crews will increase from a workforce of 30 to one of 50. In fact, the Mayor pointed out that some of the new staff will have physical or mental disabilities. The Mayor says that this is to promote “labour inclusion” and improve employment prospects for this collective that has a greater difficulty finding employment.
She didn’t mention, strangely, that by employing people with disabilities the Town Hall gets economic assistance from higher administrations.
V.M. Hernández said that there will be 1,500 new rubbish containers (which have sensors incorporated to know when they are full) and 1,400 litter bins, thus attending to a constant complaint from locals on this matter.
On the 1st, they will start eliminating the banks of hoppers in the centre of town in such locations as the Plaza de España and the Plaza de las Palmeras. They will be replaced by hoppers that will be rolled out in the evening and removed during the morning.
Finally, because this is dragging on, the first stage of the new system will run from April to January 2026 and in the second stage, they will begin collecting organic waste in line with EU regulations. The communiqué goes on… but we shan’t.
