Mayor Javier Ortega, together with the Councillor for Urban Development and Public Works, Juan Francisco Gutiérrez, visited what will be a new parking area near the bus station.
The work will be carried out by a private company with a budget of 400,000 euros, which will be financed through the Plan de Recuperación, Transformación y Resiliencia, belonging to the EU – surprise!

Furthermore, whilst this is going on, the Town Council is working on the new accord for urban buses, which will include a shuttle service between the car park and the beach area, as well as the Casco Antiguo.
Now, for some reason the Mayor refers to this new parking area as Disuassive Parking – perhaps there is somebody standing at the entrance with a big stick… who knows? OK, it probably means that it’s there to dissuade people from taking their cars into town (thus avoid traffic congestion) and instead taking a shuttle bus into town instead.
“Although the new dissuavise car park must have a minimum of 200 parking spaces, the object it to aim for 300,” explained the Mayor.
The plan is for everything to be set up by summer after approval by the Comisión de Transportes. The end result, he said, would be more bus routes and with more bus frequency.
Editorial comment: well, the Playa Cantarriján shuttle service works pretty well, with motorists leaving the car up on the main-road car park and taking the shuttle down to the beach. However, unlike the case of Cantarriján, which is a natural park and access is strictly controlled, there is no prohibition in Salobreña from driving down to the beach and looking for parking there… which remains the national sport of the Sanitex on holiday, bless their cotton socks.

Reader’s comment: “Will the shuttle bus be able to take all of the families needs for the beach too?
Shame that parking is not allowed alongside the beach wall area, as it was. How wide an area for pedestrians do you actually need. Rather then drop off or paid parking areas?” – Patrick Barry Storey
You can land a 747 on the pedestrian pavements as it is, so why are they keeping the section of road that was brought in to maintain distances during Covid? – Martin
