Officer in Road Accident

A 51-year-old, motorbike, police officer belonging to the Guardia Civil was injured in a road accident yesterday.

This occurred on the N-340 near kilometre point 349 within the municipality of Gualchos. According to 112, the officer was travelling in the direction of Castell de Ferro when he lost control of the bike. No other vehicle was involved.

The emergency coordination centre, 112, received an alert around 17.45h to say that the rider was in need of medical assistance, so an ambulance was despatched.

The paramedics on board the ambulance treated him (or her) on the spot before taking the officer to Hospital de Santa Ana in Motril. However, the injuries sustained were such that the officer was discharged that same afternoon.

According to one eyewitness, the accident was provoked when the rider took evasive action in order to avoid hitting a mountain goat on the road.

The Asociación Unificada de Guardias Civiles (AUGC) regretted that the airbag on the bike did not work correctly (they go off when there is no need and fail to do so when there is).

Consequently, they want “a serious investigation and steps taken immediately,” read the AUGC press release. They also pointed out that some bullet-proof vests are defective and need replacing.
