Trevélez Rescue

Tuesday the 11th at 15.55h the Guardia Civil received a call informing them that a mountain climber had suffered a fall in the Río Trevélez area and was unable to move.

They immediately sent out a patrol from Bérchules and upon arriving they spoke with the person who had made the call. The man gave his friend’s telephone number (the man who had had the accident) and the police called the victim to find out exactly where he was and what had happened.

With the help from locals from Trevélez they reached the coordinates that the victim had passed to them, which was the Barranco del Peñabón. The locals guided them, starting climb following the Acequia de Cástaras then cut across the mountainside

They found him at 18.53h at the bottom of a very steep barranco with a lot of vegetation at the bottom. He was showing signs of hypothermia and was unable to stand. It appeared that he had fractured his hip.

Despite the encroaching night and the difficult terrain, the two officers and three locals managed to get him out and take him to the main square in Trevélez where an ambulance was waiting to take him to Hospital Santa Ana in Motril.
