The Torrox Policía Local found two German-Shepherd dogs in a lamentable state, suffering malnourishment, scabies (mange) and leishmaniosis in Torrox.

One of the dogs was in such a bad state that it had to be put down. They barely weighed 16 kilos, when their normal weight for their age should have been more double.

The dogs had lost areas of their coat to scabbies/mange and showed fear towards humans, which probably indicated they were being physically maltreated.

The police intervened a couple of months ago after receiving complaints from neighbours and an animal refuge association. Both dogs were being kept in a dwelling in the town centre.

The dogs were transferred to the kennel managed by Don Animal in Rincón de la Victoria. As mentioned above, one of the dogs was in such a state that it had to be put down to end its suffering, whereas the other is responding favourably to treatment.

The dogs were being looked after by a woman, who claimed to be the mother of their owner. The owner (verified by reading their microchips) was in fact doing time in prison.

However, upon release he demanded that the Policía returned the surviving dog to him, which caused an uproar amongst the neighbours and the animal refuge. In the end, the Councillor for Agriculture, Ana Pérez (PP), convinced the man to relinquish ownership of the dog.
