Child Dies from Fumes Inhalation

Five members of the same family were hospitalised because of carbon monoxide poisoning in La Bañeza (León) one of whom, a 9-year-old boy, died.

The mother, father and their two other children of eight and ten years of age are being treated in the Hospital de León.

Emergency services were alerted at 06.15h yesterday morning after the 38-year-old mother noticed a strong smell of gas. She had quickly called 112 and the Policía Local and the Guardia Civil rushed around to number 55 Calle Juan Carlos I Rey. It was the mother, in a state of shock, who opened the door to them.

The family had only arrived to live in La Bañeza after moving from Cameroon some days earlier, according to the Chief of municipal police, Salvador Rivera Soto.

Inside was the 40-year-old father and the three childen aged eight, nine and ten. Paramedics tried during 20 minutes using CPR to resuscitate the 9-year-old but to no avail.The officers had been ventilating the dwelling as the ambulances arrived

The rest of the family were taken to the aforementioned hospital to be treated for carbon monoxide poising from a coal fire.

The PM of Castilla y León, Alfonso Fernández Mañueco, expressed via social media his “consternation” over this fatal tragedy that had occurred in La Bañeza.
