Mountain Bike Setback

The Environmental Board belonging to the Junta de Andalucía has put a hold on Motril's plan to mark out mountainbike (BTT) routes within the municipality.

The reason given was that the municipal scheme, “does not comply with environmental specifications.” The Junta considers that these routes could “Deteriorate the natural environment owing to the constant passage of bicycles.”

When the various administrations got together to discuss this, amongst them was Luiz Zarco, who is one of the bike riders that is behind establishing these routes. He considers that this negative decision was taken without evaluating the routes, despite their having been used in multiple BTT Trials, including the Copa de España.

It is the routes through La Nacla and Bullarenga that require Junta approval, which was denied for the above mentioned reasons.

However, there are this kind of BTT routes in other protected areas, such as the Centro BTT de Güéjar Sierra where ten such routes exist along a total of 180 kilometre over ground of varying difficulty.
