Municipal Market Update

Almuñécar's Long await municipal-market inauguration will now not be until July – it was previously announced to be "at the beginning of 2025."

However, work is definitely advancing as much of the glazing, which makes up a wall, more or less, is in place. What is also advancing is the budget, because it has now reached seven million.

Inside there are 44 market stalls and four leases available for a cafeteria and shops.

There have been set backs, like for instance when the present Mayor, Juan José Ruíz Joya, took office only to be greeted with the news that the construction company had thrown in the towel because the soaring price of materials had made the contract into a net loss for them, so the Mayor got his finger out and come up with the goods.

But there have been several setbacks, amongst them the transport strike, too, meaning that building materials weren’t getting through.

It should not be forgotten either, that the Mayor’s party took advantage of the Covid lockdown to demolish the old one, knowing that everybody was locked up in their homes and couldn’t come out and block the demolition work with a street protest – this had been the case when they demolished the old Paseo del Altillo, with protesters standing in front of heavy machinery to prevent them moving… a touch of a Tiananmen Square showdown.

Anyway, what is nearly completed is the underground car park with its 230 parking spaces, which should be finished by next week.
