World Underwater Championships

The Mayor of Almuñécar, Juanjo Ruiz Joya, is very keen for the World Underwater Photography & Video Championships to take place in the municipality.

Almuñécar has a good chance of being selected either in the 2025 championships or the following year.

“The Spanish Federation of Underwater Activities (Fedas), the Andalusian Federation of Underwater Activities and the Benalmádena Diving Club have backed Almuñécar’s candidacy, which will not only include the seabed off Almuñécar and La Herradura, but also off Maro and Nerja, as both the municipalities of Nerja and Almuñécar share the Natural Park of Maro-Cerro Gordo cliffs.

The main reason that Almuñécar believes that it has a good chance is because it has already hosted the Andalusian, Spanish and European championships in this field.

In Mayor Ruiz Joya own words, “We have a great international opportunity to spread the word on the beautiful and rich seabeds off Almuñécar and La Herradura, where the possibility of diving all year round exists.”

The Cantillados de Maro-Cerro Gordo form a narrow strip running along the coast, twelve kilometres in length and a nautical mile out to sea. The land side of the natural park is hemmed in by the N-340. Counting land and seabed the natural park consists of 395 hectares of land and 1,415 hectares of seabed.

Of special importance is the existence of orange-coral populations, which is a species classified as in danger of extinction.
