La Dana Strikes

Last night, the Dana swept across southern Spain, causing significant disruption along the Costa Tropical, particularly in the municipalities of Almuñécar, Salobreña, and Motril.

The severe weather brought heavy rainfall, strong winds, and even hail, leading to localized flooding and power outages.

In Almuñécar, residents reported swollen rivers and mudslides that damaged roads and properties. Many videos and images have appeared on social media sites showing the normally empty rivers fast flowing and full of debris.

Images of the waters hurtling towards the beach adjacent to Calle Guadix in Almuñécar show the water just inches from the top of the retaining wall. Firefighters and emergency services responded to numerous calls for assistance, clearing debris and helping those trapped by the rising waters. Local authorities advised residents to stay indoors as conditions worsened, emphasizing the need for caution.

In Salobreña, coastal areas experienced strong waves that damaged beach infrastructure and eroded beaches. Several beach bars and restaurants faced damage from strong surf, and town officials are assessing the extent of the damage. The weather system also disrupted transport, with reports of delays on local roads and minor accidents due to slippery conditions.

Motril’s port authorities were on high alert as the storm affected maritime operations. Ferries and fishing vessels faced delays, while businesses reliant on imports and exports braced for potential losses.

The regional government has announced the activation of emergency protocols and is mobilizing resources for clean-up efforts. As the storm begins to weaken, recovery efforts are set to commence, but officials warn residents to remain vigilant for possible aftereffects, including landslides and additional rainfall.
